Grenada: Lemon Nutmeg Sweet Potatoes

I was hesitant to try this dish at first because sweet potatoes have never been a favorite of mine. However, the lemon and nutmeg pairing intrigued me. My initial plan was to add garlic and salt to counteract the sweetness of the potatoes, but in the end that was not needed! Delicious!
What you'll need:

3 sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered
.25 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
1.5 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Salt and pepper to taste

Step 1: Boil the potatoes for about 15 minutes or until soft. Drain and return to pot.
Step 2: Begin to mash the potatoes. Add olive oil, butter, lemon juice, and nutmeg. Continue to mash until smooth.
Step 3: Salt and pepper to taste. Serve with butter (if desired).

  1. The first thing I thought when I read this is that I bet my preserved lemons would be awesome in this substituted for the lemon juice. But I suppose that would make the dish more Morrocan (and I recently learned, i.e. 20 seconds ago when I looked it up, that Grenada is nowhere near Morroco). I wonder if they have sweet potatoes in Morroco?
